Leggo my Leggo--Oh, it will pass......

Posted by Heidi

Last week, my son swallowed a Lego. Most mommies, or daddies would freak out. Not me... I will tell you why.
When I was a child, I swallowed at least 3 foreign objects.
The first one that I recall was a penny.
Why the stupid thing was in my mouth, I have no earthly idea, I do know that by the time this happened, I was already potty trained.
My poor mother, probably by recommendation of my pediatrition, required me to go back on the training pot to allow her to take a tongue depressor to each and every bowel movement that exited my body until she found the penny in question. What a horrid experience!!!
The day my son came running to me in hysterics screaming about how he has swallowed a Lego, my first thought was HOLY JESUS, I am going to have to dig through his poop to find it, DEAR GOD ---NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I calmed him down, asked his how big it was. He showed me a small Lego, orange and somewhat insignificant in the grand realm of legos, particularly when thinking about passing it.
I calmed him down, and explained to him that it went into his tummy and now he must wait for it to come out in his poop. This freaked him out even more. The poor little guy.
Now after this commotion was all done, I thought about it for a bit.
I swallowed, (of what I can recall) a penny, a piece of balloon, and a nut, ( as in nut and bolt). Of all these things, I never died. They all got swallowed and they all passed without incident. So I determined that the same thing would be true for my son.
I told his father about it, and his teacher, should it pass while he was at school, and it happened to be painful. But after one week, and hearing from my sons mouth every time he had bowel movement, " NO LEGO MOMMY" ( he is now a little OCD about the Lego now, I am afraid to report) he is regular, he doesn't seem to have any long term effects of having a swallowed a Lego.
I talked to my boss, who happens to be a Dr. and she reassured me that if there was a problem, it would have presented itself before now, so there really was nothing to worry about now. I refused to dig through his stuff....No way... there is a lot I would do for my son, but I have to draw the line somewhere. Don't you agree?

He is fine, he is happy and the Lego had learned a lesson, don't get into any child's mouth.
HAHAHAHAHAHA.
